3 Things the Federal Carbon Tax Makes More Expensive

On April 1st of this year, the Federal Government forced a Carbon Tax on Canadians living in Ontario. This move makes life more expensive for Ontarians. The Federal Liberal Carbon Tax makes life more expensive in many aspects of daily life such as:

1. Your commute to work

When Doug Ford became Premier of Ontario, he scrapped the Kathleen Wynne Carbon Tax which resulted in a price drop of about five cents per litre at the pumps. The PC Government did this because it understands that driving isn’t a luxury for most people. People shouldn’t be penalized for driving to work or bringing their kids to hockey practice.

Makes sense, right?

When the Federal Liberals forced its carbon tax on Canadians living in Ontario, they were slapped with a ¢4.4/litre increase to the price of gas. This increase will cost Ontario families hundreds of dollars each year.

2. Heating your home

It doesn’t just cost you more to fill your car – it costs you more to heat your home now too.

Heating your home in the Canadian winters isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity.

The federal carbon tax increased the price of natural gas in Ontario by 3.9 cents per cubic metre. This increase is also scheduled to rise to 5.9 cents in 2020, 7.8 cents in 2021, and 9.8 cents per cubic metre in April 2022.

This will increase the cost for the average family to heat their homes with natural gas by $94 in 2019, and $235 in 2022.

Three quarters of Ontarians rely on natural gas to heat their homes.

3. Buying groceries for your family

As if that wasn’t already enough, the Federal Carbon Tax is making groceries more expensive. When the cost of transportation, refrigeration, store heating and more go up the cost is passed on to the consumer, that’s you. Groceries, like heating your home and driving your car, is not a luxury, it’s a reality of everyday life.

The PC Government built a Made-in-Ontario Environmental plan that will protect our air, land and water, reduce waste and address litter, increase our resilience to the effects of climate change, and help us all to do our part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The PC Plan would see Ontario meet its goals, while focusing on big emitters, not families heating their homes or people commuting to work.
