Supporting Ontario’s Trucking Sector

Improving and expanding rest areas will support safer and more convenient stops for truck drivers

Our PC government recognizes that there is a significant need for more truck parking across the province.

To help address the shortage of truck parking, Ontario is investing in a 5-year plan that includes repairing or expanding 14 existing rest areas, building 10 new rest areas, and adding 178 additional truck parking spaces at four existing ONroute Centres.

“Truck drivers spend long hours moving goods of every type and description on our roadways and we need to ensure they have a modern, safe and welcoming place to stop and rest,” said Caroline Mulroney, MPP for York-Simcoe and Minister of Transportation. “During the pandemic, our carriers and drivers have been going above and beyond to get essential goods to market and we truly appreciate their effort, especially during this busy holiday season.”

This is part of the government’s plan to build safer and better highways, support the trucking industry and get good goods moving in every corner of the province.

Research confirms that driver fatigue contributes to a significant number of truck collisions. We are helping keep Ontario’s roads and highways among the safest in North America by providing more opportunities for trucks to stop and safely park so that drivers can rest.
