Advancing Priority Subway Projects

One step closer to getting shovels in the ground on the Scarborough Subway Extension and the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension

Our PC government is keeping its promise to build better public transit in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) – one that is modern, sustainable and will forever change the way people travel throughout the region.

This week, our government issued Request for Proposals (RFP) to advance tunnelling work on the Scarborough Subway Extension and the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension, part of the largest subway expansion in Canadian history. This marks an important step towards delivering the projects and the province’s commitment to building transit faster, eliminating gridlock, and connecting people to places and jobs.

“After waiting over 30 years for a subway, our government is taking another critical step forward to build the improved, three-stop Scarborough Subway Extension for the people of Scarborough,” said Doug Ford, MPP for Etobicoke North and Premier of Ontario. “This project will create thousands of jobs, drive housing development, and triple the daily ridership to help reduce congestion and cut travel times for riders and commuters.”

“We are making smart, long-term transit investments to address congestion, and give the people of Etobicoke, Mississauga, and the rest of the Greater Toronto Area more options to get where they need to be,” said Caroline Mulroney, MPP for York-Simcoe and Minister of Transportation. “Our government is committed to ensuring that our vital transit projects empower people and provide additional benefits for the communities in which they are being built.”

On August 5th, three teams were shortlisted to each advance tunnelling work on both projects. Our PC government is inviting these teams to respond to an RFP and to formally detail how they plan to design and deliver advance tunnelling works for the project.

Once built, the Scarborough Subway Extension and the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension will reduce travel times for commuters by eliminating gridlock, relieving congestion, and strengthening connections, generating long-term economic benefits, and improving the environment.
