Providing Seniors The Quality Care They Deserve

Accelerating the development and upgrading of long-term care beds across the province

After inheriting 15 years of under-investment in long-term care and a massive waitlist of seniors, our PC government is kick-starting the rapid development of much needed long-term care homes to ensure our most vulnerable citizens can live in modern surroundings.

The Modernized Funding Model, announced today, will not only help break down barriers and accelerate the construction of urgently needed long-term care projects, but will also help upgrade existing older homes to meet the high quality standards our seniors deserve, with features like air conditioning and private or semi-private rooms.

Our plan will:

  • Create four new regional categories that includes large urban and urban, mid-size and rural. We will increase province’s construction funding subsidy (CFS) tailored to each of these four categories, enabling the government to address the barriers and needs of different communities
  • Provide upfront grants, between 10 per cent and 17 per cent depending on regional category, to cover the cost of development charges, land and other development expenses.
  • Help small operators in rural communities navigate the high cost of development, while ensuring larger urban centres can secure the loans and real estate they need.
  • Increase funding to incentivize the construction of basic accommodation and continuing top-ups for small and medium sized homes.

Today’s announcement will result in an estimated 8,000 new long-term care beds and 12,000 redeveloped long-term care beds. These estimated 20,000 beds are the first step in several new initiatives our PC government will be putting forward to meet our commitment to the province’s most vulnerable people.

Working together with our long-term care partners, our government is using innovative ideas and modern solutions to support our most vulnerable Ontarians.
