Statement from Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown on Anniversary of Black July

Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown made the following statement today marking the anniversary of Black July:

“Today I join with Ontarians of Tamil Heritage in remembering the events of Black July, 1983.

We pause to remember the innocent victims of the pogroms, where violent mobs carried out attacks against the Tamil population. Homes and businesses were destroyed and many innocent civilians perished.

I continue to urge the international community to pressure the Sri Lankan government to put in place measures to ensure the protection of human rights for all in Sri Lanka. I will continue to call for accountability.

Earlier this year, we took time to remember the genocide of 2009 and to reflect on the principles of peace, democracy and equality.

We must never forget the innocent victims of war and violence.”
