Wynne Government fails to deliver for Niagara

Trains to Grimsby well short of Niagara needs

Kitchener – It was another day, another Transportation Minister GO announcement falling well short of the mark for Niagara, according to Ontario PC Transportation Critic Michael Harris.

“After today’s announcement, Minister Del Duca has confirmed that he is leaving Niagara commuters waiting for the train,” Harris indicated. “I don’t know if the Minister has checked the map lately, but trains to Grimsby by 2021 falls well short of Niagara’s needs now.”

While Harris remained hopeful regarding a subsequent commitment to deliver service to Niagara Falls by 2023, a promise that was supposed to have been completed nearly ten years earlier by 2015, he noted this announcement was only one in a series the Minister has been making on an almost daily basis.

“Minister Del Duca has been traveling to every corner of the province – promising that any and every transit project will be complete within the next decade, while providing absolutely no details about funding,” added Harris. “While the Liberal Government loves to talk about transit we have to wait years to see shovels in the ground.”

“The Liberal Government has been in power for 13 years, there is no more time for excuses. This has been taking far too long. All studies on GO service to Niagara have been completed; it’s time for action now!” Harris concluded. “The Government must develop infrastructure plans within the mandate they were elected. In the 2014 election, MPP Jim Bradley promised full GO service within the next year. They should be honouring their past commitments rather than making new promises based on political survival.”

“We in the Ontario PC Party and the experts agree that the need for this vital piece of infrastructure is now – not 2023. We would work with experts to get GO train access to Niagara as quickly as possible.”
