Statement by Ontario PC Leader on CFB Borden’s Centennial Anniversary
On the centennial anniversary celebration of Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Borden, I offer my heartfealt congratulations to our men and women in uniform, our veterans, and support staff who served honourably in the defense of the freedoms we enjoy today.
Forged by the necessities of the Great War, members of the 157th Battalian (now known as the Grey and Simcoe Foresters), from Barrie and area began construction of Camp Borden in April 1916. From there, thousands of our finest men and women were trained and sent to fight. After the Great War, Borden became the largest air station in Canada, becoming the “Birthplace of the Royal Canadian Air Force”. Over the years, Borden has expanded to train other occupations and elements of the Canadian Armed Forces, including Signals, Armour, Infantry, Service Corps, Medical, Dental, Police, Engineers, and cadets.
Since the gates of Borden opened, almost 2 million men and women have passed through for training. It remains today the largest military training base in Canada, supporting over 15,000 trainees each year, and continues to proudly host other lodger units.
CFB Borden contributes significantly to the local economy and surrounding communities. It is a vital part of Ontario’s history, and the Borden Legacy Monument is a fitting tribute from the community.
