MPP LAURIE SCOTT CALLS FOR MINISTER OF HEALTH TO BE FIRED FOR CUTTING NURSES AND PUTTING PATIENTS AT RISK
QUEEN’S PARK – Today during Question Period, MPP Laurie Scott asked the Premier to fire the Minister of Health and to stop the assault on the province’s nurses.
The government has relentlessly cut nurses across the province, including freezing the budget for hospitals like Ross Memorial in Kawartha Lakes, forcing the elimination of 153 nursing positions at Peterborough Regional Health Centre, 61 registered nurses at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton, and 71 nurses from Mississauga’s Trillium Health Centre. In the last year, the government has fired a total of 1,400 nurses.
“No area of this province has been spared from this government’s failure to deliver on the home, long-term and mental health care that our patients need, especially as our population ages and medical conditions become more complex,” said Scott. “The Minister of Health has so obviously failed his mandate to ensure that the needs of Ontario’s patients be at the centre of our health system, and that quality of care and health outcomes be improved.”
With fewer and fewer nurses, the decrease in nursing hours means that patient care is cut. As the Liberal Government continues to deprive patients and their families of the healthcare that they rely on, Scott and the PC Caucus are calling on the Premier to replace the Minister of Health.
“This government is out of touch, out of focus, and is no longer driven to provide the services that our people so desperately need,” added Scott. “As a former nurse, I firmly believe that our registered nurses, nurse practitioners, registered practical nurses and nursing students deserve our support and respect.”
Additional examples of the Wynne Liberals’ cuts to health care include:
- $815 million cut from physician services
- 50 medical residency positions eliminated
- $20 million slashed from the assistive devices program
- $50 million cut to physiotherapy services for seniors
- Nine consecutive years of hospital fun
