Statement from PC Northern Development & Mines Critic Norm Miller on the 20th National Mining Week
The following is a statement from PC Northern Development and Mines Critic Norm Miller on the 20th National Mining Week:
“The Ontario PC Caucus stands wholeheartedly behind Ontario’s mining industry and recognizes the important role it plays in our provincial economy. With more than 40 mines in operation and entire cities founded around the mining industry, the province of Ontario is steeped in mining tradition and potential.
The mining industry employs more than 380,000 Canadians with nearly 256,000 individuals working in what is referred to as Ontario’s mineral cluster. This diverse industry includes operating mines, corporate offices, mining supplies and services, and legal, financial, engineering and environmental consulting.
National Mining Week is a great opportunity to celebrate the hard work of these individuals, as well as the contribution made by the mining sector to Canada as a nation.
This year’s theme for National Mining Week is ‘Working Together to Realize Canada’s Mining Advantage,’ highlighting cooperation to support the sustainable development of minerals and metals. The decisions a government makes in this industry has a profound impact on the future of the sector in the province.
With ongoing exploration work across Ontario’s 70-million hectares available for staking, along with the generational opportunity that is the Ring of Fire, I am confident that mining will – and must – continue to be a part of Ontario’s future. The Ontario PC Caucus is committed to working with the mining industry, and will continue to advocate for capturing the full potential of the mining sector in the province – ensuring the industry’s storied tradition continues for generations to come.”
