Ontarians Hit with Another Rate Increase, Despite what Minister of Finance Says

QUEEN’S PARK – On May 1st, Ontarians experienced an additional rate increase on their hydro bills, with annual energy costs for the average family going up by $37.56.

“On April 19, just over two weeks ago, the Finance Minister said hydro rates are going down. But yesterday, everyone else’s hydro bills went up,” said Leader of the Official Opposition Patrick Brown during Question Period. “It’s clear from the Finance Minister’s comments in the House that he must be getting a special deal on hydro.”

Ontario’s energy costs are among the highest in North America, they are also increasing at the fastest rate on the continent. Since November, hydro bills have increased by an average of $186.96.

“How is it that Minister Sousa thinks hydro rates are going down when everyone else in the province now has to pay an extra $37.56 just to keep the lights on?” added Brown.

“The people of Ontario would like to know how they can get the special deal on hydro rates that the Finance Minister has. Can the Minister of Finance explain how everyone else can get in on his special hydro deal?” concluded Brown.
