Statement from Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown Commemorating the Battle of the Atlantic
The following is a statement from Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown to mark the anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic:
“Canadians from across the country, from coast to coast to coast, gather to commemorate the Battle of the Atlantic on the first Sunday in May. We remember those lost at sea in the longest single campaign of the Second World War.
The Royal Canadian Navy escorted more than 25,000 merchant ships across the Atlantic, often in treacherous conditions, fighting off submarines and warships. Canada suffered more than 2,200 fatalities and lost 33 vessels. However, without these supplies, the Allied war effort in Europe would likely have collapsed.
We salute the brave men and women, officers and sailors of the Royal Canadian Navy, the Merchant Navy, the Women’s Royal Canadian Naval Service, and the Royal Canadian Air Force on their sacrifice. We remain proud of the courage that they displayed, their dedication and unity of effort. Their hard-fought battles will not be forgotten.
I also want to take this time to recognize members of the naval community in Ontario who continue to serve, particular onboard our frigates HMCS Toronto and HMCS Ottawa, and those who serve at our naval reserve divisions in our great province at HMCS Prevost, HMCS York, HMCS Carleton, HMCS Griffon, HMCS Hunter, HMCS Star, and HMCS Cataraqui.
Thank you for your loyal service!”
