Statement by Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown to Mark Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day

The following is a statement from Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown to Mark Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day:

“Today marks a sad and solemn day for Armenian people around the world, including the over 25,000 Ontarians of Armenian descent, as it marks the 101st anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, also known as Medz Yeghern.

Starting just over a century ago, the Armenian genocide was perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire in a deliberate act of ethnic cleansing. The loss of hundreds of Armenian public figures in Constantinople, including clergymen, teachers, politicians and artists, marked the beginning of this horrific tragedy. Up to 1.5 million Armenians would lose their lives during forced relocations as a result of starvation, beatings and executions. As one of the first modern genocides, the Armenian Genocide was a chilling sign of the genocides yet to come in the 20th century.

On this Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day, we must commit ourselves to ensuring that the victims of the genocide are never forgotten and that we work to ensure that it is never repeated.”
