First Time Vietnamese Freedom Scarves Worn in Ontario Legislature
PC Caucus celebrates the Vietnamese community
QUEEN’S PARK – April 30th is the Journey to Freedom Day in Canada. Yesterday, MPP Julia Munro marked this occasion by making a Journey to Freedom Day statement in the Legislature in celebration of the Vietnamese community in Ontario.
MPP Munro also requested and received unanimous consent for MPPs to wear the Vietnamese freedom scarves in the Legislature in honour of this day.
“We are honoured to be joined by many Ontarians of Vietnamese heritage today. It is about more than recognizing the challenges of the past. It is also to celebrate the contributions of the Vietnamese community towards building our province,” said MPP Munro.
“It is a historic day for the Vietnamese community in Ontario and here at Queen’s Park today”, said Leader Patrick Brown. “This is the first time MPPs wore the freedom scarves in the Legislature.”
The striped scarf was patterned off the Freedom and Heritage Flag. Its design symbolizes the enduring strength of the Vietnamese community.
Senator Thanh Hai Ngo and a number of key leaders from the Vietnamese community were present to witness this historic moment.
“Our association and families across the Greater Toronto Area and Ontario would like to convey our deepest appreciation and heartfelt gratitude toward all Members of the Ontario Legislature for honouring our community today,” said the Vietnamese Association, Toronto (VAT).
