Statement from Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown on the 99th Anniversary of Vimy Ridge

The following is a statement from Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown on the 99th Anniversary of Vimy Ridge:

“Today, we honour the bravery and sacrifice of the Canadian soldiers who 99 years ago successfully accomplished what other countries’ armies could not – through sheer grit and determination our soldiers took control of German-held Vimy Ridge, an important strategic location in Northern France.

It is often said that Canada’s national identity was born on the battlefield at Vimy Ridge. It was the first time in history all four Canadian divisions fought together in a battle as one team – giving the world a sense of what a strong and united Canada is able to accomplish on the world stage.

Our nation’s triumphs that day did not come without costs – approximately 3,600 lost their lives in the conquest, and an additional 7,000 were wounded, many of whom were Ontarians. It is important to take stock of the costs of victory, and to honour those who sacrificed everything they had.

Almost a hundred years after the call to arms, our appreciation to these soldiers remains steadfast.

To all of the brave men and women who have given their lives in service, and those who continue to willingly serve our nation, I offer my heartfelt thanks. Our country should take solace in the fact that the world is a safer place because of the contributions and sacrifices Canadian soldiers have made on battlefields like Vimy Ridge.

Lest we forget.”
