Statement from Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown on the Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care

The following is a statement from Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown on yesterday’s incident at the Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care:

“I am deeply disturbed to hear about the violent incident that occurred at Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care that left two staff members seriously injured.

The staff at Waypoint provide crucial mental health services to the people of Ontario, and I commend the bravery of those who put themselves in harm’s way to intervene.

When I toured the facility in November 2015, I heard firsthand the significant safety and security concerns of staff, concerns that have been consistently raised since the facility opened in May of 2014.

The Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services and the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care have a duty to ensure the safety and security of the staff and clients of Waypoint.   I am calling on the Liberal Government to take immediate action to address these long-standing issues to prevent such an shocking incident from happening again.”
