St. Patrick’s Day Statement
Today is St. Patrick’s Day, the celebration of Ireland’s missionary Patron Saint, which has become an important holiday across North America, including here in Ontario.
For Ontarians, it is an opportunity to remember that our Irish community has been helping to build our province since long before Confederation. It is worth noting that there are over two million Ontarians with Irish ancestry.
I myself am very proud of my Irish heritage and enjoy celebrating my background on St. Patrick’s Day each year.
The fact that St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated so widely and vibrantly by Ontarians of all backgrounds reflects our appreciation of the Irish community’s immense contributions to the success of our province and our country. It is fitting that Canada’s coat of arms includes the Royal Harp of Tara and the Shamrock.
I am pleased to note that March 17 is also recognized in Ontario as Irish Heritage Day, an initiative shepherded in 2004 by then Member of Provincial Parliament John O’Toole.
On behalf of our entire Ontario PC Caucus, I wish all Ontarians a Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Sláinte!
