The Ontario PC government is taking bold action to secure Toronto’s energy future by partnering with the City of Toronto to build a third electricity transmission line into the downtown core.
Right now, Toronto relies on just two transmission supply paths — both of which are expected to reach capacity by the early 2030s. With electricity demand projected to double by 2050 — the equivalent of building a second city — this new line is critical to supporting growth, maintaining reliability, and keeping life affordable.
The new transmission line will help power:
- 285,000 new homes, supporting Toronto’s 10-year housing target
- Major infrastructure like the Ontario Line, GO Transit electrification, and new community developments in East Harbour, the Port Lands, and Downsview
- Economic expansion and job creation in Ontario’s most important economic hub
This project is part of Ontario’s first-ever Integrated Energy Plan, a comprehensive strategy that ends the patchwork approach of the past and brings together electricity, hydrogen, natural gas, and other energy sources under a single, forward-looking roadmap.
By investing in critical infrastructure and planning ahead, the Ontario PCs are building a stronger, more resilient energy system — one that supports housing, jobs, and prosperity across Toronto and beyond.
