Liberals still evading questions surrounding Goodwill Toronto bankruptcy
QUEEN’S PARK – The Liberal Government continues to evade questions surrounding the bankruptcy of Goodwill Toronto, said Perth-Wellington MPP Randy Pettapiece, who serves as Opposition Critic to the Minister of Community and Social Services.
Last year, the government granted $4 million to Goodwill, including nearly $1.7 million from the Ministry of Community and Social Services (MCSS).
Pettapiece questioned Helena Jaczek, the Minister of Community and Social Services, today in Question Period: “What do they [Liberal Government] have to show for it, besides the $230,000 CEO salary?” MPP Pettapiece demanded. “That money – like the millions blown in the SAMS fiasco – is gone.”
“Does it surprise the Minister to know that, as far as taxpayers are concerned, the Liberals have abused all of their ‘good will’?”
According to a recent Toronto Sun report, Goodwill insiders said MCSS funding was shifted to unrelated areas, leaving disabled clients without proper staff or resources. The report also suggested executives expensed things like car washes “with no apparent checks and balances,” and staff did not receive proper training.
Minister Jaczek refused to respond to the allegations when Pettapiece raised them in the legislature.
“The Minister needs to tell us why she rewarded such dysfunction with millions of dollars,” Pettapiece added. “Why didn’t the minister hold this CEO accountable? Why did the minister treat the CEO with the same kid gloves they used with Chris Mazza at ORNGE?”
