MPP Monte McNaughton Calls for Immediate Moratorium on North Kent Wind
Today, Monte McNaughton, MPP for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex issued the following statement:
“The Wynne Liberals are showing complete arrogance and disregard for the residents of Chatham-Kent by not testing well water and allowing the construction of the North Kent Industrial Wind Turbine project to proceed. But it goes even further: they’ve contributed to making life even more unaffordable for local residents who are diligently fighting this issue.
“Local residents have spent over $233,000 out-of-pocket to test the water, which is money taken away from their families, farms and businesses. Their independent results have shown the well water to be turbid and undrinkable, which is caused by the installation of these wind turbines.
“It’s unacceptable that the Wynne Liberals have remained silent about launching their own investigation about the contaminated water.
“I have now raised the alarm bells with the Liberals several times dating back to 2012, and yet nothing has been done. I brought the issue forward in 2012 to the Environment Minister, again in 2016, again in April this year, and finally I called for action earlier this month.
“Today I’m calling on the Wynne Liberals to impose an immediate moratorium on the construction of North Kent Wind and for the Ontario government to conduct or oversee independent groundwater monitoring tests. As I said 20 days ago, allowing the proponent of the renewable energy project to monitor its own activities with regard to groundwater is unacceptable.
“Life is harder under the Wynne Liberals. It’s time for a change in Ontario. It’s time for a government that puts Ontarians first, and works to see families pay less and get ahead.”
