MPP Lorne Coe Uses First Question in Legislature to Highlight Durham Health Care Cuts
QUEEN’S PARK – This morning in the Legislature, Lorne Coe, the newly elected MPP from Whitby-Oshawa asked his first question in the Legislature. After acknowledging the honour of being elected to represent the people of Whitby-Oshawa and reminding the Premier that he was sent to Queen’s Park with a clear mandate, MPP Coe challenged the current state of Ontario’s underfunded health care system.
“Under the Liberals’ watch, Ontario Shores Centre for Health Sciences has had 56 jobs cut. These cuts were much-needed nursing positions that have led to wait times up to a year in duration,” stated MPP Coe. “Will the Premier reverse the health cuts in Durham Region and will she give my constituents the health care system they deserve?”
The reality is that the Wynne Liberals are making it increasingly difficult for hospitals to meet the health needs of Ontarians. Hospitals, including Ontario Shores, have been faced with four consecutive years of frozen budgets
“Concerned Ontario Doctors showed up in Whitby–Oshawa to send the Liberals a strong message, and we’ve listened,” MPP Coe continued. “The government’s cuts are forcing physicians to reduce their office hours and to layoff or reduce staff hours.”
MPP Coe referenced a family doctor in Durham Region who had to reduce office hours as a result of the Government’s cuts. The reduced office hours have now affected 500 patients.
“How does the Premier explain to those patients why they can’t get a doctor’s appointment?” MPP Coe concluded.
