LIBERAL STRATEGY TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST INDIGENOUS WOMEN A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION: SCOTT
QUEEN’S PARK – Ontario PC Women’s Critic, Laurie Scott, MPP, made a statement today on the Liberal government’s “Walking Together” strategy to end violence against indigenous women.
“Violence against women, including women from our indigenous communities, should not be tolerated in our society. Making our communities safer must be a priority for the Liberal Government.
Today’s announcement on the strategic framework to end violence against indigenous women builds on the “It’s Never Okay” action plan, calling for the end to the attitudes and behaviours related to sexual violence and harassment. Bill 132, the Sexual Violence and Harassment Action Plan Act, is an important component, and we must get it right.
I hope that Bill 132 will be further strengthened with amendments from all sides of the Legislature. I look forward to seeing the results of the collaborative spirit that has guided our work to end the cycle of violence.
The Walking Together strategy appropriately highlights the crisis of human trafficking that is happening right under our noses, in our neighbourhoods and our communities. I am pleased that the government will develop a survivor-centred strategy to assist in the identification, intervention and prevention of human trafficking in Ontario, especially for our indigenous women.
My bill, the Saving the Girl Next Door Act, is an important part of the long line of discussions, consultations and collaboration to end an evil practice that is nothing short of violence against women. It takes direct and immediate steps to fight this crime. I hope that the government follows on its good work found in the Walking Together strategy, and enacts my bill immediately.”
