Ontario Opens First New Medical School in 20 Years

Ontario is taking a historic step forward in strengthening our health-care system with the opening of a new medical school at Toronto Metropolitan University in Brampton.

This fall, 176 students will begin their training at the TMU School of Medicine, supported by a nearly $180 million provincial investment. This marks Ontario’s first new medical school in two decades and will help ensure more homegrown doctors are available to care for families across the province.

When fully operational, the TMU School of Medicine will include:

  • 94 undergraduate seats in each year of study
  • 117 postgraduate entry positions
  • Two primary care teaching clinics to provide hands-on learning while expanding access to care in local communities

This investment is part of the government’s largest medical school expansion in more than a decade, which also includes a new medical school at York University, scheduled to open in 2028.

Since 2018, Ontario has:

  • Added nearly 100,000 new nurses
  • Trained more than 15,000 new doctors
  • Announced $300 million for up to 17 new and expanded primary care teaching clinics in high-need communities

By opening new medical schools and expanding training opportunities, Ontario is building a pipeline of highly skilled health-care professionals to protect and strengthen our health-care system for years to come.
