Ontario PC Health Critic Questions Liberals On Lack of Consultation with Ontarians
QUEEN’S PARK – This morning Ontario PC Health Critic, MPP Jeff Yurek (Elgin-Middlesex-London) questioned the Liberal government about their lack of consultation in regards to Bill 122, the Mental Health Statute Law Amendment Act, 2015.
Many stakeholders voiced their concerns that the government did not consult them about the bill and indicated that this bill could have addressed many issues that are currently missing.
“Yesterday we learned in committee that the Ministry of Health failed to consult with many stakeholders regarding Bill 122, the Mental Health Statute Law Amendment Act, 2015. They failed to consult with the Ontario Medical Association, the coalition of Ontario Psychiatrists, the Registered Nurses Association, Legal Aid, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health during the creation of this bill,” stated MPP Jeff Yurek.
Yurek is concerned with the Government’s lack of consultation when developing public policy, often making unilateral decisions without considering the impact on stakeholders, businesses and families across the province.
“This is not the first instance of the Wynne Government not consulting with stakeholders,” continued MPP Yurek. “This government did not consult Ontarians on the sale of Hydro One even though a survey showed that 80% of the population was strongly opposed to the sale. Just last week, this government announced that medical marijuana users were allowed to smoke or vape anywhere in Ontario before reversing their decision a day later based on feedback from the media and the general public.”
“In my riding of Elgin-Middlesex-London, the Liberals have failed to properly consult with stakeholders on the removal of Glanworth Bridge, a vital transportation link for local farmers and businesses, and instead have ploughed ahead with a design that will create many safety issues for all motorists. It is clear that this government is not in it for Ontarians,” concluded MPP Yurek.
