Ontario’s PC government is taking the next step toward reopening the Brantford Jail as part of a historic $3 billion investment to expand correctional capacity, keep violent and repeat offenders behind bars and protect communities across the province.
Unlike the previous Liberal government, which closed eight jails, Ontario’s PC government is expanding correctional capacity to ensure dangerous offenders stay off our streets.
The province is exploring the reopening of the Brantford Jail, which could add up to 125 correctional beds. Planning and design work is underway to determine the upgrades needed to safely reopen and operate the facility.
Since 2018, Ontario’s PC government has hired more than 4,000 correctional officers and is adding more than 2,500 correctional beds over the next decade to ensure the correctional system can keep pace with stronger bail and sentencing laws. Protecting Ontario means investing in the correctional facilities and frontline staff needed to hold violent offenders accountable and keep communities safe.
