Statement from Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown Commemorating Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day
“We commemorate the tragedy of the Armenian genocide in solidarity with members of Ontario’s Armenian community.
“This day of mourning and reflection, also known as Medz Yeghern in Armenia, is a sad reminder of the crimes against humanity which were perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire in a deliberate act of ethnic cleansing.
“Up to 1.5 million Armenians would ultimately lose their lives in cruelest fashion. From the forced relocations which resulted in starvation and death, to the beating and executions which came to mark Medz Yeghern, this was a truly dark period of history.
“As one of the first modern genocides, the Armenian tragedy was a chilling sign of the genocides yet to come.
“I encourage all of us across Ontario to commemorate the victims of this calamity.”
