Modernizing Ontario’s Grade 9 Math Curriculum

Under the Liberals, too many students failed to meet provincial math standards. That’s why for the first time since 2005, the PC government is modernizing grade 9 math to focus on real-world applications and financial literacy to prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow.

For over a decade under the previous Liberal government, too many students have not been meeting Ontario’s math standards – lacking everyday math, financial literacy, and numeracy skills.

Ontario’s elementary and grade nine math curricula were last updated in 2005 when Youtube was just starting up and Twitter and the iPhone didn’t exist yet. The economy and job market has changed since then and we believe your child’s curriculum should remain relevant and aligned with the life and job skills that will set them up for success.

That’s why, the PC government is modernizing Ontario’s Grade 9 math curriculum which emphasizes learning on coding, data literacy, mathematical modelling, and financial literacy.

“We are better preparing students with the life and job skills they require – to ensure Ontario students succeed,” said Stephen Lecce, MPP for King-Vaughan and Minister of Education. By emphasizing real-world applications for mathematics, the new course will teach students valuable fundamentals that will give them a competitive advantage when they graduate. With new math-focused learning supports and a new curriculum, our government is also taking the first step toward ending early streaming in Ontario, while promoting equal opportunities for all students to succeed in school.”

Under Premier Ford’s leadership, Ontario is being positioned as a global leader in STEM education. All students will now be better positioned to succeed by learning critical skills that will give them a competitive advantage and help them through their education and get good-paying jobs.
