Supporting Ontario’s Mining Sector

First-ever Critical Minerals Strategy will generate investment and create jobs and opportunities in the mining sector

Our PC government is developing Ontario’s first-ever Critical Minerals Strategy as part of our commitment to drive investment, increase Ontario’s competitiveness in the global market, reduce red tape, and create jobs and opportunities in Ontario’s mining sector.

“By developing this strategy, we will strengthen Ontario’s position as one of North America’s premier jurisdictions for responsibly-sourced critical minerals, including rare earth elements,” said Greg Rickford, MPP for Kenora—Rainy River and Minister of Energy, Northern Development and Mines and Minister of Indigenous Affairs. “We are confident this will generate investment, reduce red tape, create jobs and advance Indigenous participation in the sector. Local and global markets, including Ontario-based industries, are looking for reliable, responsibly-sourced critical minerals and we are ready to capitalize on this growing market demand.”

Ontario is uniquely positioned to supply the world with critical minerals that are vital to strategic, high-growth industries like electric vehicles, computer and telecommunications technologies, and clean technologies that will support a low-carbon future. With the development of this strategy, our PC government is showcasing Ontario’s world-class critical mineral industry and signaling to the world that Ontario is ready to meet the demand for responsibly-sourced critical minerals.

To inform the Critical Minerals Strategy, the Province is releasing a discussion paper for public consultation on the Environmental Registry of Ontario. A consultation with industry and Indigenous communities will also help guide the development of the Strategy to be released this fall.
