Increasing Mental Health Funding for Postsecondary Students

Additional funding will give colleges and universities the ability to expand services and better meet student needs creating the best conditions possible for students to achieve their goals

Over the years, we’ve seen an increase in student mental health issues at our postsecondary institutions.

We know that college and university can be a difficult time for our students, and that the COVID-19 outbreak has only increased the pressure on students’ mental health. That’s why our PC government is investing an additional $7 million in mental health supports to help postsecondary students access the mental health supports and services they need.

This additional funding will give our colleges and universities the ability to expand services while providing more supports for students, both on-campus and virtually. It can also be used to address the needs of vulnerable and diverse groups, such as Indigenous students, LGBTQ students and students with disabilities.

Today’s announcement is part of the Ministry of Health’s $147 million in mental health supports in response to COVID-19.

This investment is on top of our government’s $19.25 million in mental health supports for postsecondary students in the 2020-21 academic year.
