Change that Works for the North

Patrick Brown and the Ontario PCs will reverse the 148% aviation fuel tax increase on Northern airports

Today Patrick Brown, Ontario PC Leader, announced his plan to reverse the 148% aviation fuel tax for all Northern airports – large and small – brought in by Kathleen Wynne and the Liberal government.

“The Wynne Liberals’ irresponsible 148% hike to the aviation fuel tax has made life harder and more costly for people living in Northern and remote fly-in communities,” said Brown.

An Ontario PC Government will support Northern communities and the hardworking people who live there by reversing the aviation fuel tax on Northern airports to pre-2014 levels. This tax reversal will help with the cost of living in Northern Ontario, and help these communities increase tourism, strengthen business development and attract jobs.

“Aviation is not a luxury for people living in the North, it is a lifeline. These remote communities rely on air cargo to deliver necessities such as food, fuel and supplies,” said Brown. “The Wynne Liberals have raised the cost of living for everyone in these communities by recklessly increasing taxes on the fuel they rely on for their livelihood. This shows how out-of-touch the Wynne Liberals are with the people of Northern Ontario.”

The People’s Guarantee is the Ontario PC Party’s plan to get Ontario back on track. It includes an entire section on Northern issues including building roads to the Ring of Fire, unlocking Northern Ontario’s mining opportunities, and bringing back the Northlander train service.

The People’s Guarantee includes five key guarantees:

  • 22.5% lower income taxes for the middle class
  • 75% refund for child care expenses
  • 12% more off your hydro bill
  • Largest mental health commitment in Canadian provincial history
  • First-ever Trust, Integrity, and Accountability Act
