Cracking down on gun and gang violence

Ontario’s PC Government is upping the ante in its fight against gun and gang violence threatening our communities. Today, the Government announced new measures to protect law-abiding citizens and put criminals where they belong – behind bars.

Initiatives announced today will reduce gang violence and curb access to illegal weapons. These include:

  • New investments to combat the evil that is human trafficking;
  • Enhanced support for speedier bail hearings for gun-related offences;
  • A new GTA/Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH) Gun and Gang Fund to support partnerships and projects across law-enforcement agencies;
  • A new Eastern Ontario Gun and Gang Team to support the efforts of the Ottawa Police.

The Government’s measures seek to hit gangs where it hurts. It is also worth noting that more than half of firearm-related homicides are related to the activity of gangs.

The Honourable Doug Downey, PC MPP for Barrie Springwater Oro Medonte stated today that the “government is committed to disrupting the drug, gun, and human trafficking that is fuelling gang operations across the province and threatening the safety of families and neighbourhoods.”

We can’t fight this senseless violence alone. We need your help holding violent criminals accountable for their actions. Add your name to our petition.
