Ensuring Teaching Jobs Go To The Best Educators

Our PC government is fully committed to standing up for students and parents who deserve the best, most qualified educators that better reflect the community they teach.

That’s why we are revoking Regulation 274, which sets the hiring policy for teachers in the province. Instead of seniority, teacher hiring in Ontario will now be dictated by merit, diversity, and the unique needs of schools and communities. This approach is needed more than ever as it also supports school boards in hiring teachers to meet their local needs and increase distancing in the classroom.

For too long, our newer and younger educators have been left behind, and they deserve opportunity for progression.

“For nearly a decade, teachers in this province have been hired through a convoluted system that preferred seniority over skills, abilities, diversity and lived experiences of teachers. In a time where teacher hiring is necessary to ensure students get the best education possible, these changes will further enable principals to swiftly hire the best candidate so they can focus on improving the quality of education and helping our students be the best that they can be,” said Stephen Lecce, MPP for King-Vaughan and Minister of Education.

Our government is giving school boards more flexibility so they can hire the best, most qualified candidates, while ensuring that students can better see themselves reflected in the educator at the front of the classroom. Parents, trustee associations, principal councils and many other voices have long called for this reform, and under Premier Ford, our PC government is delivering it.
