Helping Municipalities Improve Transit

$375 million investment through the Gas Tax program will help municipalities across the province sustain and improve public transit

Supporting transit systems is more important than ever as communities work to recover from COVID-19.

That’s why our PC government is providing $375 million in public transit funding to 109 municipalities through the Gas Tax program to help them deliver public transit service to 144 communities and more than 13 million Ontarians.

This funding will help ensure people have access to safe, reliable transportation to get to work or pick-up essential items like a prescription. The Gas Tax program is a reliable source of long-term transit funding municipalities can count on to help operate and expand existing public transit services.

In July 2020, the provincial and federal governments announced up to $2 billion under the Safe Restart Agreement to support municipal transit systems with operating costs like vehicle maintenance and employee wages, revenue losses as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and other costs like installing driver protection barriers.

Public transit plays a critical role in Ontario’s economic recovery by helping people travel for essential purposes in communities across the province. We remain committed to helping municipalities improve transit in every corner of the province.
