Liberal Government Votes Down Brown’s Motion Calling for Credible Budget Plans
QUEEN’S PARK – Leader of the Official Opposition Patrick Brown expressed his disappointment after the Wynne Liberals voted down his Opposition Day Motion calling for sound fiscal management of the province.
If passed, the motion would have called on the Government to present a credible plan to balance the budget, and take immediate action to pay down the debt while preserving the quality of education and health services in our province.
“While I am certainly disappointed, I am definitely not surprised. This is the same Liberal Government that has run nine consecutive multi-billion dollar deficits,” said Brown. “As a result of 13 years of Liberal scandal, mismanagement, and waste, this Government is broke. It will be the taxpayers who will be forced to pay for this government’s mistakes as they continue to slash services, raise taxes, and sell-off money generating assets.”
For the first time in Ontario’s history, our provincial debt has surpassed $300-billion, and this year the Ontario Government will pay approximately $12-billion in interest on the debt.
“This is money which could be invested in essential services,” concluded Brown. “Unless Ontario takes immediate action to address our debt crisis, our debt will continue to crowd out needed social services.”
