Only Doug Ford and the Ontario PCs will Unlock the Economic Potential of the Ring of Fire

Building an all-season road to the Ring of Fire will bring more jobs to the north

SAULT STE. MARIE, May 7, 2022 – Today, Doug Ford re-affirmed that a re-elected PC government will continue to work alongside Indigenous communities to build an all-season road to the Ring of Fire. This will establish a Corridor of Prosperity to support improved access to goods, services and health care for remote communities, as well as bring better jobs and bigger paycheques to northern communities.

“Only the Ontario PCs have been able to work alongside Indigenous partners to break the log-jam and take important steps forward in getting an all-season road built to the Ring of Fire,” said Doug Ford. “For 15 years, the Liberals were all talk but no action. Andrea Horwath and Steven Del Duca will find any reason to say no to building a road to the Ring of Fire with endless studies, reports and committees.”

Recently, Marten Falls and Webequie First Nations announced that they are co-leading the planning of the Northern Road Link project as part of a historic partnership with the province. This step represents significant progress in moving this project forward to build reliable, all season road access connecting First Nations communities to Ontario’s highway network.

A re-elected PC government will spend $1 billion to build the road to the Ring of Fire.

Connecting the mineral-rich opportunities in the Ring of Fire with manufacturing and auto sectors in southern Ontario will support the province in becoming a leading producer of the critical minerals needed for electric vehicles and the batteries that power them.

“For too long, our northern and Indigenous communities have been cut off from the rest of Ontario because previous governments never made them a priority,” added Ford. They’ve heard enough empty talk and broken promises. The Ontario PCs will get it done and build the road to the Ring of Fire.”

Doug Ford is the only leader with a real plan:

  • Rebuilding Ontario’s economy with good manufacturing jobs, more support for small business and a mining plan that will finally open up the Ring of Fire.
  • Working for workers by encouraging apprenticeships and opening up jobs in the skilled trades, allowing colleges to grant three-year degrees and increasing the minimum wage.
  • Building highways and infrastructure, including Highway 413, the Bradford Bypass while investing in the 401 East
  • Keeping costs down by lowering gas taxes, getting rid of license plate stickers and removing unfair tolls on Highways 412 and 418.
  • Plan to stay open by hiring more nurses, doctors and personal support workers, allowing more seniors to stay in their own homes and producing more vaccines and critical supplies like PPE right here in Ontario.

Only Doug Ford will Get it Done.

Quotes:

“The Ring of Fire is home to some of the most significant mineral deposits in the world and provides Ontario with a natural advantage when it comes to producing the materials required to build the electric vehicles and economy of the future. We are now seeing significant progress being made to ensure that these resources are safely extracted and connected to the world markets. The benefits of these investments to this region is hard to over-state, and will bring good jobs and economic opportunities to the communities of Northern Ontario.”

Del-Duca Wynne Liberals Delivered Nothing but Empty Words on Ring of Fire.

The Ontario Liberals talked a lot about the Ring of Fire. They even seemed to understand it could deliver good jobs to northern communities.

While they talked a lot, here’s what they delivered: nothing.

What They Said:

“The Ring of Fire could become one of the world’s largest discoveries of chromite, and the only one in North America. It has the potential to provide significant economic development opportunities in the province.” (August 25, 2011)

“The Ring of Fire represents one of the most significant mineral regions in the province, and includes the largest deposit of chromite ever discovered in North America.” (May 9, 2012)

Two years later…

“The Ring of Fire represents one of the most significant mineral regions in the province, and includes the largest deposit of chromite ever discovered in North America.” (April 29, 2014)

“Building these roads is a critical step in realizing the economic benefits of one of the biggest mineral-development opportunities in Ontario in almost a century.” (August 21, 2017)

“We have not changed. We are solely committed to making sure that we can get the Ring of Fire up and running.” (May 2, 2017)
What They Delivered:

…nothing.

While Andrea Horwath and the Ontario NDP like to say they support developing the Ring of Fire, they voted to prop-up the Del Duca-Wynne Liberals and their empty words. They voted against the PC government’s $1 billion in funding for infrastructure around the Ring of Fire.

Only Doug Ford and the Ontario PCs are getting it done by working with Indigenous partners to build an all-season road to the Ring of Fire.
