Patrick Brown Calls for Commission of Inquiry into Liberal Fundraising

QUEEN’S PARK – Today during Question Period, Leader of the Official Opposition Patrick Brown asked the Premier to call a Commission of Inquiry into her Liberal Government’s political fundraising practices.

“Despite the Premier’s newfound interest in fundraising reform it does not fix the years of quotas and money that has been raised by the Ontario Liberal Party,” said Brown. “The people of Ontario need to know if government contracts and grants were traded for donations to the Ontario Liberal Party.”

The Liberal Government has had 4 OPP investigations against them, and a senior Liberal operative has been criminally charged. Recent media stories surrounding political fundraising in Ontario have contributed to the perception that the Liberal Government has been selling access to line political coffers.

Following allegations of corruption in regards to the distribution of public contracts at the municipal level, the Quebec Government called a Commission of Inquiry. The Charbonneau Commission resulted in the resignation of several big city Quebec mayors.

“The people of Ontario need the truth to come out,” concluded Brown. “If this government has nothing to hide, will the Premier call a commission of inquiry to investigate the connection between Liberal party donations, government grants and policy changes?”
