Statement by Interim Ontario PC Leader Vic Fedeli on Greek Heritage Month
“Today marks the beginning of Greek Heritage Month. Traditionally March, and in particular March 25th, is a time of great celebration for the Greek community, as we remember Hellenic Heritage.
“Hellenic Heritage Day commemorates the beginning of the Greek War of Independence in 1821, the Greek Revolution began in efforts to liberate the country from Ottoman rule; ushering in one of the true golden ages of Western civilization.
“During this month there will be many celebrations across the province displaying Greek culture and tradition. These celebrations provide an excellent opportunity for all Canadians to experience the best of Greek heritage and reflect on the many important contributions that our Greek community has made to Ontario.
“We are fortunate to have a vibrant Greek community here in Ontario who continues to make significant contributions to the economic and cultural landscape of this province.
“As Canadians, we must also not forget that our country’s fundamental values have their roots in ancient Greece, the birthplace of democracy.”
