Statement by Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown celebrating Vaisakhi
Vaisakhi is one of the most important holidays for people of the Sikh faith, as it marks the founding of the Khalsa in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh. On this day, the followers of Sikhism celebrate the introduction of the Sikh articles of faith known as the ‘5 K’s.
Vaisakhi is a colourful festival, coinciding with the start of the traditional harvest season. Celebrations feature large community parades, known as Nagar Kirtans, prayerful religious services at Gurdwaras, and large family gatherings. For many Sikhs it is also a time to perform Seva, an act of charity in the service of those less fortunate.
I am pleased to note that Ontario’s Nagar Kirtans during Vaisakhi are among the largest in the world, and that they will take place right across our province – with the biggest in the Greater Toronto Area.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Ontario’s 200,000-strong Punjabi Sikh community for your commitment to the values of family, faith, compassion and equality. Ontario benefits greatly from your contributions.
Weheguru ji ka khalsa, Waheguru ji ki fateh!
