Statement by Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown on Black History Month

“Every February, Canadians celebrate Black History Month, recognizing the important contributions made to our country by individuals of African and Caribbean heritage. This important legacy spans hundreds of years and Black Canadians have helped to build and defend our great nation, often overcoming significant adversity.

Soldiers such as Richard Pierpoint bravely fought in the War of 1812 before settling in Garafraxa and helping others who had moved through the Underground Railroad. By following the North Star, thousands escaped slavery, often aided by abolitionists from the religious community, and found freedom in what is now southwestern Ontario. Other Black Canadians arrived from the Caribbean or emigrated from overseas, helping to make it the diverse community of over 500,000 today in Ontario.
Black Canadians continue to make significant contributions throughout our province, including in law enforcement, business, philanthropy, arts, and sports.
I’m proud that our legislature passed MPP Ted Arnott’s private member’s bill to mark January 21st as Lincoln Alexander Day. His story and the stories of other Black Canadians continue to provide us with inspiration.
The Ontario PC Party supports making February officially Black History Month in Ontario.”
