Statement by Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown on Estonian Independence Day
Today marks the 98th anniversary of Estonia’s Declaration of Independence. Close to a hundred years ago, the people of Estonia established a sovereign and independent state.
However, Estonia’s path has not been an easy one. For many decades following 1940, it was administered by the Soviet Union. Canadians subsequently reached out to Estonians fleeing the terror of communism. I am proud that outside of Estonia, Toronto is home to the largest population of Estonians in the world. The people-to-people ties between Ontarians and Estonians continue to be strong, as are the partnerships with Ontario’s universities and cities.
Canadians of Estonian heritage are proud of their rich cultural heritage and their contributions to our country.
