Statement by the Interim Ontario PC Leader Vic Fedeli on Holi

“Marking the end of winter and the coming of spring, Holi also known as the Festival of Colours and Festival of Love is celebrated by Canadians of Hindu faith.

“Originally, Holi was an ancient celebration dating back to agricultural festivals centuries ago. The tradition is meant to bid farewell to winter, and to welcome the season of rebirth and rejuvenation that is spring. It also signifies the victory of good over evil and the triumph of light over darkness.

“During this time people gather together with friends, family, and community, to enjoy the festival and their company. It promotes the message of peace, positivity, and camaraderie; serving as a time where people strive to resolve past disputes and work to strengthen relationships.

“One of the many traditions participants partake in is the throwing of coloured powder and water onto friends and family. This is symbolic of nature’s many colours that are displayed during the spring.

“Other customs include traditional singing, dancing, eating of delicacies, and the lighting of bonfires; during bonfires many people gather around to perform folk songs and ask for the blessings of the holy fire.

“For all Canadians, Holi is an opportunity to reflect on the tremendous contributions that Hindus have made to our country’s rich and diverse heritage. On behalf of the Ontario PC party, we wish you a joyful and fun filled Holi.

“Holi Hai!”
