Statement from Ontario PC Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation Critic Norm Miller

“On behalf of the Ontario PC Caucus, I would like to extend my best wishes to all of those marking the first Treaties Recognition Week in Ontario.

“Treaties are part of the fabric of our province and represent a connection between our indigenous and non-indigenous populations. Some of these treaties pre-date Confederation, as well as both the current borders and the creation of Ontario.

“Education is one of the most important aspects in respect to honouring treaties in the present day. This inaugural week serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about the history and importance of treaties across Ontario, in both our schools and our communities.

“It is important to note that as we observe this week, the treaty process is still active in our province. Once the Algonquin Land Claim process reaches its conclusion it would be the first modern day treaty in our province’s history.

“I believe this process underscores the importance that treaties have played in the past, and the role that they will continue to play in the future.

“As we look forward, I would like to say that I am honoured to recognize the first Treaties Awareness Week in Ontario. Education on and respect for treaties is a key step on the path to reconciliation that we as Ontarians will continue to travel with our First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities.

“Thank you. Merci. Meegwetch.”
