Statement from Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown on Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day):
The following is a statement from Ontario PC Leader Patrick Brown on Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day):
“On Victory in Europe Day, we honour all of the brave Ontarians who put their lives on the line in the pursuit of global freedom, and pay tribute to all soldiers, sailors, and aviators who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Seventy-one years ago today, Allied forces secured victory in Europe over Nazi Germany in World War II, liberating thousands from concentration camps in the process.
Upon news of peace in Europe, millions of Europeans from across the continent crowded into the streets in celebration, revelling in the end of a period of darkness and the beginning of a period of hope for a better and brighter world.
More than one million soldiers from Canada and Newfoundland volunteered to serve in the war, not only because they wanted to protect the freedom they had come to expect at home, but because they wanted to extend that freedom to the oppressed abroad.
Canadians played integral roles throughout the war, securing essential victories and having a major impact on the end result. Whether it was Juno Beach, the Falaise Pocket, the Battle for Caen, the Battle of the Atlantic, or the Battle of Britain, Canada’s military legend and prowess grew during WWII. Countries in Europe still honour the contributions and sacrifice Canadians made in their liberation.
Our country, and our province, owes all of our veterans a debt of gratitude. Canada would not be the same without their service.
Lest we forget.”
