Supporting Farmers
Enhancing insurance protection to help farmers experiencing new business challenges during COVID-19
Our PC government recognizes that the COVID-19 outbreak has created new business pressures and increased uncertainty for farmers, including challenges with labour shortages.
That’s why, together with the federal government, we are providing the best support possible to help farmers manage challenges beyond their control by enhancing AgriInsurance coverage for the 2020 growing season to include labour shortages due to COVID-19.
AgriInsurance is a federal-provincial-producer cost-shared program that protects producers against significant risks that threaten the viability of their farm and are beyond their capacity to manage, such as weather, disease and pests. Ontario farmers who purchased production insurance for the 2020/21 season will be eligible for extended coverage of labour shortages provided that they have implemented health and safety best management practices on their farm.
The added insurance coverage will include:
- Inability to attract sufficient on-farm labour due to COVID-19; and
- Illness or quarantine of on-farm labour and the producer due to COVID-19.
This additional support is the latest action our PC government is taking to support the agri-food sector during the outbreak. We will continue to work with the federal government to ensure that our farmers have the certainty they need as they grow and harvest the food we eat every day.
