TORONTO COUNCIL TAKES ACTION AND ENDORSES SCOTT’S LEGISLATION TO FIGHT HUMAN TRAFFICKING

QUEEN’S PARK – Today, Toronto City Council passed a motion supporting MPP Laurie Scott’s initiatives against human trafficking. The motion was introduced by Councillor Paul Ainslie (Ward 43) and seconded by Councillor Mike Layton (Ward 19) calling on City Council to support Bill 158, Saving the Girl Next Door Act, 2016, and the final report of the Select Committee on Sexual Violence and Harassment.

“I am pleased to see different levels of government come together to raise awareness of the necessary steps in tackling such an important issue,” said Scott, PC Critic for Women’s Issues. “Having the support of Canada’s largest city is encouraging as I continue the fight against this heinous crime.”

Traffickers recruit, transport, harbour and control the girl next door for sexual exploitation or forced labour. Human trafficking is one of the fastest growing crimes, and over 90 percent of victims are Canadian-born.

“Toronto City Council’s motion endorses steps that the Liberal Government can take now to combat labour and sex trafficking, including the creation of a provincial task force” added Scott. “The work does not stop here. We all must work collectively to help eradicate human trafficking and save the girls next door.”
