Wynne Liberals must stop cuts to autism services

Toronto, ON – Today, Leader of the Official Opposition Patrick Brown and Deputy Leader and Ontario PC Critic for Children & Youth Services Sylvia Jones called on the Wynne Liberals to reverse cuts to Yes I Can Nursery School, a specialized school that serves preschool age children with autism. Brown and Jones were joined by Yes I Can Nursery School executive director Janet MacDougall, Liberal Senator Jim Munson and other stakeholders urging the Liberal Government to ensure the continued operations of the school.

Yes I Can Nursery School, a not-for-profit registered charity, provides specialized programs to over 100 young children with autism and children with special needs annually. The province cut the school’s $150,000 annual funding this year and has requested a transition plan from the school.

Quotes:

“I have met with children and their parents whose lives were changed because of the services and care Yes I Can Nursery School provides. This school offers an opportunity for children with autism to reach their full potential. It is unacceptable that Premier Wynne is now turning her back on these children, leaving so many families with nowhere to turn. I urge the Liberal Government to ensure the continued operation of Yes I Can Nursery School.”

Patrick Brown, Leader of the Official Opposition

“I have seen first-hand the tremendous work taking place at Yes I Can Nursery School in helping children with autism. It’s unfortunate this government has decided to stop providing the necessary support to this great organization. No child should be left behind in receiving the necessary support they deserve.”

Sylvia Jones, Ontario PC Critic for Children and Youth Services

“I am urging the provincial government to honour their commitment to work on a plan with Yes I Can Nursery School for sustainable operational funding and to keep us open. Early intervention is key to the success of children with autism, and our programs are invaluable. Families travel from throughout the GTA for the specialized classes for preschoolers with autism. We believe each child deserves a chance to reach their full potential. On behalf of the children and their families, we ask the government to come back to the table.”

Janet MacDougall, Executive Director of Yes I Can Nursery School

“I am proud to stand with Yes I Can Nursery School in their call for provincial funding to be restored. Having dedicated my work in the senate to advocating for those with autism and intellectual disabilities, I can tell you governments should never cut funding for children with special needs.”

Senator Jim Munson
